10 Guidelines for Effectively Using Water Flosser

2023-09-28

A water flosser, also known as an oral irrigator, is a device that uses a jet of water to remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and along the gumline. It can be a great addition to your oral hygiene routine, especially if you have braces, dental implants, or find traditional flossing difficult or uncomfortable.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to use a water flosser effectively:

1.  Choose the right tip: Water flossers usually come with different tips for various purposes. The standard tip is suitable for general use, but there are specialized tips for braces, implants, and gum health. Select the appropriate tip for your needs.

2. Fill the reservoir: Remove the reservoir from the base of the water flosser and fill it with lukewarm water. If desired, you can also add mouthwash or an antibacterial rinse recommended by your dentist.

3. Adjust the pressure settings: Most water flossers have adjustable pressure settings. Start with the lowest setting and gradually increase it until you find a comfortable level. High pressure is not always necessary for effective cleaning.

4. Lean over the sink: Position yourself over the sink to prevent water splashing. This will allow the water to flow out of your mouth freely.

5. Place the tip in your mouth: Place the tip into your mouth, making sure it is comfortably positioned between your teeth. Close your lips enough to prevent water from splashing outside of your mouth.

6. Turn on the water flosser: Start the device and allow the water to flow. Begin with the back teeth and work your way around the mouth, moving from tooth to tooth.        Spend a few seconds on each tooth, targeting the areas between your teeth and along the gumline.

7. Aim the tip correctly: Aim the tip at a 90-degree angle towards your gumline. This will help remove plaque and debris effectively.

8. Move systematically: Follow a systematic pattern to ensure you clean all the surfaces of your teeth. You can start from the back, moving forward on both the upper and lower teeth.

9. Clean all areas: Pay special attention to hard-to-reach areas, such as around dental work, braces, or implants. Move the tip along the gumline and between teeth to thoroughly clean each area.

10. Clean the tip and reservoir: After each use, rinse the tip and reservoir with clean water and allow them to air dry.

Regularly clean and disinfect water dental flosser equipment according to the manufacturer's instructions for water flosser.
