Are water flossers bad for your gums?

2024-01-31

When used correctly, water flossers are generally safe and should not harm your gums. In fact, they can be beneficial for gum health by removing plaque and debris that can contribute to gum disease. However, improper or excessive use of a water flosser can potentially cause issues.

If the water pressure setting on the flosser is too high or if you hold the tip too close to your gums, it may cause discomfort, irritation, or even damage to the gum tissue.  It is important to start with the lowest pressure setting and gradually increase it to a level that is comfortable for you. Keeping the tip of the flosser at a 90-degree angle to your gum line and moving it along the gum line can help prevent any potential harm.

Additionally, using a water flosser should not replace proper brushing and flossing techniques. It is still important to brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and to use traditional dental floss or other interdental cleaning devices to remove plaque and debris from between your teeth.

If you have any concerns about using a water flosser or if you experience any persistent gum discomfort, it is always best to consult with your dentist or dental professional for personalized advice.
