Do water flossers remove tartar?

2024-04-08

Water flossers, also known as water picks or oral irrigators, are devices that use a stream of pulsating water to clean between teeth and along the gumline. While water flossers are effective at removing food particles and plaque, they are not typically recommended for removing tartar.

Tartar, also known as dental calculus, is a hardened form of plaque that forms on teeth when plaque is not adequately removed through brushing and flossing. Once tartar has formed, it generally requires professional dental cleaning to be effectively removed. This is because tartar is firmly attached to the teeth and cannot be removed by regular brushing and flossing alone.

While water flossers can help prevent the buildup of tartar by removing plaque, they are not considered a primary tool for tartar removal. Regular dental visits for professional cleanings are important to remove tartar and maintain good oral health.
